Halloween Outtakes

connor-tabs-halloween-5

If you ever meet a photographer who says that they only have to take one or two pictures to get the right shot, they’re totally pulling your leg. On average, it takes me about 20, especially when a baby and/or a cat is involved.

Obviously, when we go trick-or-treating tonight, Connor isn’t gonna be able to eat her candy…and that’s where Mom comes in. ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope she gets pounds of Snickers and Twix.

I had a mini Twix the other day, and it was phenomenal!

It’s been years since I had a Twix, which now, in retrospect, is a travesty.

The Essie Winter 2016 Collection: Getting Groovy With a Very Special Branch

essie winter 2016

Essie Winter 2016 and my favorite Misa Jewelry Branch necklace

If I lost this necklace, I would cry a river of sparkly tears.

It was a very special present from El Hub last Valentine’s Day shortly before Connor was born, and the reason it’s so special to me is…

Well, first of all, I like the shape. It’s a branch by Misa Jewelry. I think I’ve talked about them before.

The owner, Misa Hamamoto, is based out of LA, and she’s got this sort of, almost Hawaii-like aesthetic — very beachy, organic and natural, but also elegant.

When I run my fingers over the branch, the surface doesn’t feel perfectly smooth. There are subtle imperfections in it, little bumps and ridges, like in a piece of driftwood. It really speaks to me.

It also reminds me of the last few weeks right before the baby came, that sort of end-of-the-road time when I was over being pregnant but also excited about the coming changes and a little afraid at the same time. I mean, it had just been me, El Hub and Tabs for a long time; we were adding a new branch to our family.

This is one of very few pieces of fine jewelry I own. I don’t own a lot of fancy jewelry because 1) I tend to lose it, and 2) because costume jewelry is so much fun! You can wear crazy gems and pearls the size of your fist — you know, things I would never be able to afford if they were real. Plus, if I lose costume jewelry, I’m not as completely devastated.

Maybe because the branch isn’t perfectly smooth, it looks extra sparkly and beautiful sometimes when the light hits it right. That’s why it reminded me of this golden bottle of Essie Getting Groovy from the six-piece Essie Winter 2016 Collection, which is available now ($9 each).

Getting Groovy has teeny, tiny golden glitter bits, and I’m wearing two layers of it in these pics. But you could probably get away with one. It’s very opaque.

I like that the flecks of glitter in it aren’t huge like they are in some glittery gold nail polishes. They’re more refined.

Swatches of the other five Essie Winter 2016 shades from the left: Go With the Flowy, Party on a Platform, Ready to Boa, Satin Sister and Oh Behave

There are also five other shades in the collection, and other than the gold, my faves are grayish white Go With the Flow, which has its own fine micro-glitter flecks, except that its flecks are green, purple and pink.

Getting Groovy

Surprisingly, though, you can’t really see the glitter directly when you get it on your nails. It definitely does reflect light, but the sparkle goes into hiding, just like Chanel secret shimmer does. It looks like something Chanel would do.

I also like the deep, dark green called Satin Sister. It reminds me of being in the jungle in Hawaii after it rains.

Ah… I wish I could teleport to Hawaii for a late lunch right now.

Karen

Makeup and Beauty Blog Monday Poll, Vol. 447

happy halloween

Happy Halloween!

Well, it isn’t exactly a poll. It’s more of a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past NINE (!) years. (It’s like a kickstart for your brain.) I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine. ๐Ÿ™‚

1. What’s your favorite scary movie?

I don’t know if it counts as a traditionally scary movie because it’s not Carrie or Halloween or that one with Jason Voorhees that I can never remember because they all kind of blend together…but it’s The Craft, that classic film about a quartet of angtsy teenage witches…

Haha! I cracked myself up…

I’ve watched that movie so many times, though. The style is so gloriously ’90s. Heck, I may watch it again tonight. It’s a Halloween classic for me.

And then there’s Rosemary’s Baby, too. I’m more of a suspense person than a blood, guts and gore person. I’d rather wonder about the big reveal at the end than jump in my seat at ear-piercing sounds.

I like the simplicity of Rosemary’s Baby and how the evil characters are just the people in her everyday life. She’s completely unsuspecting…

2. Do you own a feather boa?

Well, yeah, obviously! ๐Ÿ™‚ I think I own two.

3. Do you ever cry listening to music?

All the time, especially when I’m PMSing…

Actually, even when I’m not PMSing. Some songs just make me super emo.

Don’t even get me started about the time I heard Adelle’s Someone Like You for the first time. I was parked at a stoplight to make a left turn one day when I was driving home (I think it was also raining, which may have contributed to the water works) and heard that song for the first time.

I burst into tears.

Yes, I’m that person crying by herself while listening to Adelle in the car.

4. Would you ever get a matching tattoo with someone?

Hell, no! That would be the kiss of death for me. I’m not about to put a matching tattoo on myself. I’m too fickle. I’d think it’s really cool one day, but the next day I’d be like, “What the #$$%@ did I do!?”

Then the other person would feel bad because I’d have this tattoo I want to remove… Yadda, yadda, yadda — bad idea.

5. If you could be on a ’90s TV show, which show would it be?

This is a really tough one because, on the one hand, Saved by the Bell, and how cool would it have been to hang out with that crew?

But I think I’ll pick 90210 — the old version with Donna, David, Brenda, Brandon, Kelly, Dillon and that whole group, because I always thought they needed a sassy brown girl, and that sassy brown girl could have been me.

I would have been all up in that Brenda/Dillon/Kelly love triangle, too!

Happy Halloween!!!

Good Monday morning, my friend. ๐Ÿ™‚ Did you do any Halloween partying over the weekend? No partying for me, but Connor Claire is looking forward to rocking her monkey costume to the mall tonight.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Here are the questions to copy and paste…

1. What’s your favorite scary movie?
2. Do you own a feather boa?
3. Do you ever cry listening to music?
4. Would you ever get a matching tattoo with someone?
5. If you could be on a ’90s TV show, which show would it be?

Sundays With Tabs the Cat, Makeup and Beauty Blog Mascot, Vol. 421

Trick or cat treat!

There was a time when Tabs would have darted down the stairs, leaping over three or four of them at a time, the instant he heard me call, “Tabby! It’s time for your Halloween photo shoot (and the treats and lurvies that come with it)!!”

But he’s a mature tabby now. He walks down the stairs more often than he runs, but I think Halloween is still probably his favorite holiday…

Oh, wait! I forgot about Thanksgiving, so it would be Thanksgiving first (you know, ’cause of the turkey), and Halloween second.

He loves, Christmas, too, but he doesn’t like winter because it’s cold outside, so we don’t go for as many walks.

This year for Halloween he’s wearing his very stylish King of Hearts cat costume, which, amazingly enough, still fits! I thought it might be a little snug for him, but it’s not.

If Tabs could really go trick-or-treating, it’s easy to know what he’d like to get in terms of treats and snacks — turkey (including gravy), tuna, bacon and Oven Roasted Chicken Feline Greenies. Together, they’re the keys to his heart.

Trick or cat treat!

Trick or cat treat!

It's King Tabby of the High Kitty Court

It's King Tabby of the High Kitty Court

It's King Tabby of the High Kitty Court

It's King Tabby of the High Kitty Court

And to think, for all these years, it never occurred to me to let him try bacon, but one morning a couple months ago I just randomly put a small piece in his bowl.

He sniffed at it insensely for a minute…then picked it up in his mouth and bolted out of the room! I’d never seen him do anything like that before, but he was so completely and utterly blown away by it. THAT’s how much he likes bacon, LOL! He had to hide it for a rainy day.

What are you and your feline friends doing for Halloween this year? It looks like it’s going to rain tomorrow night, so Team MBB will probably spend the night watching scary movies and eating pizza at home. We might take Connor to the mall first to do a few circuits in her stroller, but that’s about it.

I hope you’re doing something fun.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

How Often Do You Break Out of Your Makeup Comfort Zone?

urban decay full spectrum palette

Contemplating deep thoughts while wearing the Urban Decay Full Spectrum Palette

All the time? Sometimes? Hardly ever? Or are you so stuck in your ways that you can’t even remember the last time you tried something different?

I, my friend, fall into that last group. It’s actually been a long time…

Well, before those crazy rainbow eyes from the other day.

Like, a looooong time…

I realized this while scrolling through my Instagram feed the other night (Do you ever do that just to see what you were doing this time last year? Anyways!). I thought, “Hey! I used to try different stuff all the time!”

I want to get back into the habit of doing that, because I really haven’t for the past 10 months. Most of my looks have been some variation of neutral eyes with a little liner, so it’s time to start breaking comfort zone barriers down!

How about you? With your makeup, how often do you bust a move and try something completely new?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Happy Caturday. ๐Ÿ™‚

Laura Mercier Double Impact Eye Colour Collection | Cool Gray Smoky Eyes and Smoky Pants!

laura mercier double impact eye colour collection swatches

Smoky eyes and smoky pants!

Who wouldn’t want to wear eye makeup that matches their smoky pants??

The first thing I saw when I opened this $58 Laura Mercier Double Impact Eye Colour Collection palette was that bottom row of cool-toned greys. Some of ’em looked a little blue, and I thought, “These totally look like the crazy pants my mom got me from Costco.”

Girl, these pants are everywhere! I am not kidding. Shortly after my mom got them for me, El Hub and I were driving through China Town in the city, and I saw this cute older Chinese lady walking through the crowd with a big bag of vegetables. “Look!” I said to El Hub. “She’s wearing my smoky pants!”

And then last month at our hotel in Tahoe while we were waiting in the lobby to check in, I saw a lady walking away from me with her roller bag and her cute little butt clad in these smoky pants.

I whispered, “She’s wearing my smoky pants…”

They’re freaking everywhere.

They’re grey with a sort of a blue tinge, but I don’t know. I can’t always tell with my eyes. Note to self: Make an appointment with the optometrist.

So I think I see a little blue in the pants, and I was hoping that the bottom row of colors in this palette would have a bluish tint, too, because I love bluish greys.

But when I got the shadows on my lids, they looked straight-up cool-toned grey, which is also fine…’cause I also love cool-toned greys, especially in smoky looks.

So…I think I might be spoiled for life by the super pigmented Victoria Beckham X Estรฉe Lauder palette because a layer or two with it and I’m done, but these shadows are sheerer than that.

I have to pat some on, buff it out, then pat some more, then buff that out, then pat even more, and then buff that out again.

I admit that I’m out of practice with slightly complicated, moderately intense looks, but it still seem like I’m piling a lot of this makeup on. Just an FYI.

And the fallout is fairly intense. I had a lot under my eyes when I did this look, especially when I used that dark navy blue shade. If you do your eyes first, then clean up, you’ll be fine.

I also used a few of the top row colors, like the cool-toned matte brown on the far left. I used it in the crease, then deepened it with the darker, sort of greyish brown two from the right.

I love me some mattes, and I like these too, but I feel like they look a ta heavy on my skin.

I think it was very thoughtful of Laura Mercier to include a good number of mattes in the palette because I don’t have to reach for any additional shadows when I want to do a smoky look.

Oh! — by the way, if you have Laura Mercier’s Stormy Grey Kohl Eye Pencil (it’s a GREAT pencil to have), this should look fantastic with it. I didn’t wear it here because I can’t find mine…

When I did this look, I used Laura Mercier’s new Brush It On Luxe Brush Collection, which is great, but it’s $98.

I think that Laura’s holiday travel brushes are very good, though. They’re soft and generally hold up well.

You know you’re rollin’ deep with the beauty blogging crew when you seriously start thinking about shaving your swatching arm.

You know you’re rollin’ deep with the beauty blogging crew when you have about 300 effed up macro pictures of your left eye because that’s how many it took to get one decent shot of the eyeshadow look you did for today’s post (gah!).

You know you’re rollin’ deep with the beauty blogging crew when you put off washing your makeup brushes (and you’ve got hella makeup brushes, fo’ reals) FOR WEEKS, letting them pile up until it takes you — I’m not kidding — 45 minutes to get through them all! The struggle is so real!

You know you’re rollin’ deep with the beauty blogging crew when you can recall, with shocking accuracy, the first makeup collections you fell in love with (mine were Barbie Loves MAC and MAC Smoke Signals).

You know you’re rollin’ deep with the beauty blogging crew when you get your camera so close to a pristine pan of product that you accidentally put a dent in said pan with the edge of the lens when you’re taking macro shots. DOH!

Is Messy Hair a Do or a Don’t?

k-messy-hair

Hmm… The last time I had a super sleek, super structured non-messy hairstyle was…I don’t know, maybe six or seven years ago? So I’m leaning toward the “Messy Hair Is a Do” camp.

Actually, to be honest, I’m sitting here right now, and I haven’t even brushed my hair today. It’s close to 8 o’clock at night.

It is so messy! But I think the whole messy hair trend that’s been happening over the past few years is wonderful.

A big part of that is laziness because my hair is kind of wild naturally, so being able to have it be wild in society is a big plus for me. ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t have to spend so much time taming it.

Oh, my gosh! — like in the late ’90s and early 2000s, it took such an effort to make everything so straight and sleek and perfect. Flat irons weren’t even commonplace back then. You had to do it old-school with a hairdryer and a round brush, and that’s how you “flat-ironed,” quote, unquote.

Either that, or you used a real freakin’ iron, which I did! My mom caught me, and she was like, “You’re gonna burn your face off!” So that was the end of that.

So, messy hair, a total do. ๐Ÿ™‚

The Urban Decay Full Spectrum Palette | Color Blocked Rainbow Eyes

urban decay full spectrum palette

Rainbow-ing it!

I’m staring out a window right now, a.k.a. writing, and it’s really dark outside! It’s the late afternoon, it’s cloudy, and it looks like it’s gonna rain. I don’t see any rainbows…yet.

I’m thinking that when I go out to go run some errands, I should probably wear layers, because when you live in California, that’s what you do. You wear layers. You kind of expect it. But with some things, like Urban Decay eyeshadows, I don’t expect to have to wear layers. Their shadows are usually super pigmented. Yeah, there’s a lot of fallout, too, and I expect that. But I also expect potent pigments and a formula that’s easy to blend.

That’s why I like them, and that’s also why I didn’t expect to have to do a lot of layering with the new $55 Urban Decay Full Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette.

Alas, that was not the case.

I ended up doing lots of layers with this color blocked rainbow eye look — many more than I expected to. Sometimes it took me four or five layers to get really punchy color. With the bright orange spotlight on that one lid, I even ended up having to wet my brush to intensify it.

I got the idea for this look from the bejeweled, sparkly UD logo on the front of the palette, with the colors moving into each other like a gradient. I thought, “Oh, that’s some neat color blocking. Why don’t I try that on my eyes?”

Plus, it’s a rainbow eyeshadow palette. I mean, come on. My first inclination was to use a shimmery olive and put some browns in the crease, but that would have been a missed opportunity, right? I had to taste the rainbow.

Urban Decay Full Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette
$55, limited edition and available now

Includes a dual-ended eyeshadow brush
It’s a followup to 2015’s Urban Spectrum Eyeshadow Palette.

“We organized the shadows by color family, creating a rainbow of ombrรฉ trios: pinks, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, purples, and even a wildcard row that goes from white to black. The end result? A palette that not only looks stunning, but also delivers tons of options. Create dimensional ombrรฉ looks by working within the color-coordinated trios or experiment with multiple shade groups at once. With 18 NEW shades, three exclusives from past palettes, and a wide range of finishes, you’ll never run out of options.”

You may notice that the purple family is severely underrepresented in this look. I wanted to there to be more purple with the blue eyeshadows, but I had a hard time with the purples in this palette.

Urban Decay is known for their purples, but I feel like these are skippier and patchier than usual. I ended up having to remove my makeup and restart that blue eye a couple of times. Ultimately, I ended up just sticking purple in the outer corner.

One of the colors I do like in this palette is the bright orange color called Seize.

No, not Lil’ Cease from Junior M.A.F.I.A.. ๐Ÿ™‚ But Seize. It’s a bright orange with some shimmer in it. I thought, “Hey, this’ll be fun as a spotlight.”

I was going to only use it as a spotlight shade in the center of the lid, but then I also put it into my crease. I think it’s a really lovely transition shade. Next time I feel colorful, I’m going to use it instead of my usual browns.

Rainbows bright-happy

Where are they? Here in Novato, which is about 30 miles north of San Francisco, there are usually lots of rainbows. I’ve lived in different parts of the Bay Area but never somewhere with quite as many rainbows. I can usually look off my deck on a rainy day and catch a rainbow. Sometimes even a double rainbow.

Not lately, though… It’s weird.

Are there rainbows where you live? I hope there are because rainbows are awesome.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
